PhD Scholarships

Applications to the PhD Scholarship Programme are now closed.

This element provides financial support for students from Turkey to undertake full PhD studies in the UK or vice versa. Existing PhD scholarship mechanisms of TUBITAK will be used. The aim is to build up a talented pool of well trained, internationally active doctoral students as part of establishing and maintaining world-class research systems and sustainable long-lasting links between the UK and Turkey.

Kâtip Çelebi - Newton Fund PhD scholarships provide 3 years of financial support for students from Turkey to undertake full PhD studies in the UK - The aim is to build a talented pool of well trained, internationally active doctoral students as part of establishing and maintaining world-class research systems and sustainable long-lasting links between the UK and Turkey.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

To qualify for the funding, the proposed PhD should have a “development relevance” which is defined research that has the potential to contribute to the economic development and social welfare of the countries. The application must clearly articulate a plausible pathway of how the research may lead to positive impact on the populations within a reasonable timeframe (3-15 years).

The area of PhD study should be relevant to economic development and social welfare of Turkey and this should be demonstrated on a separate page in addition to the proposal by providing a 1-2 page explanation of how the project is relevant to the development of Turkey and should be emailed to newtonfund@britishcouncil.org.tr

PhD Placements

Applications to the PhD Placements Programme are now closed.

The PhD Placements strand of Katip Çelebi- Newton Fund programme provides support for PhD students from Turkey to spend up to one year in the UK. Existing PhD scholarship mechanisms of TUBITAK will be used. In order to be qualified under the Katip Çelebi- Newton Fund programme, your proposal must clearly articulate a plausible pathway to positive impact of the research on the lives of low-income populations and to a contribution to the economic development and social welfare of Turkey within a reasonable time frame (3-15 years). If the proposal does not meet this essential criterion, it will not be considered as eligible.

Those applicants who qualify under the Katip Çelebi- Newton Fund will be able to take advantage of the prominent network linkages offered by the programme. Being part of the UK and the 15 country network of the Newton Fund programme will give researchers the opportunity to communicate and collaborate with numerous institutions and academics in a number of Newton Fund partner countries.

Building international relationships will be a useful stepping stone for PhD candidates who are on a scientific career path in an age of global concerns and needs. The Katip Çelebi- Newton Fund will help early career researchers by providing them a unique and prestige group of networks within the UK and other parts of the world.
